Charting New Waters: Hans’ Journey Through the MSc in Hydrography

When Elevate Offshore first launched its scholarship initiative with the University of Plymouth, our goal was simple: to support the next generation of hydrographers in a way that went beyond tuition fees. For us, it was about creating real opportunity—mentorship, practical learning, and a connection to the offshore world. Recently, we caught up with Hans Elyar Schaeper, our inaugural scholarship recipient, to hear how the past year has unfolded.

The First Big Challenge

“At the start, it felt like I was learning everything from scratch again,” Hans admits. Coming from a background in marine biology and oceanography, hydrography presented a whole new landscape—a technical discipline full of new systems, software, and methods. The steep learning curve didn’t put him off. Instead, he faced it head-on, and it didn’t take long before he was fully immersed in the course’s practical workshops.

“The hands-on sessions have been a highlight,” he explains. “They give us experience that actually feels like we’re on the job, not just reading about it.”

The Impact of the Elevate Offshore Scholarship

While the scholarship eased the financial burden, Hans says the real benefit has been much bigger. “It broadened my horizons. I got to meet people from the industry, hear their stories, and get a sense of the many paths within hydrography.”

A large part of this came from his mentorship with Elevate Offshore’s Technical Manager for Survey, Anthony Williams. “Having Tony as a mentor made a huge difference. He’s made it easy to ask questions, share ideas, and discuss where I might fit in the sector after graduation.”

Support Systems and Strengths

As someone with dyslexia, Hans also spoke openly about the academic support he’s received from the university. “Having extra time in exams and assessments has made a big difference,” he says. “It’s helped level the playing field and reduced the pressure during key moments.”

Hans believes that his background in marine biology and oceanography gave him a solid foundation. “Understanding ocean systems and being familiar with data analysis helped me feel less out of my depth,” he says. “I could look at challenges from different angles.”

Looking Ahead

With the course now almost coming to a close, Hans is already thinking about what comes next. “I want to learn what makes a good hydrographic surveyor. I ask a lot of questions—to technicians, lecturers, anyone willing to chat. Every bit of advice gets filed away for the future.”

Asked if he feels ready to start his career offshore, he doesn’t hesitate. “Absolutely. I’m ready to get out on a vessel, put my skills to the test, and start this next chapter.”

A New Chapter Begins

While still completing the final stages of his studies, Hans has taken his first step into the industry by joining Reach Subsea as a Trainee Hydrographic Surveyor. His new employer shared this message:

“Reach Subsea is delighted to welcome Hans Elyar Schaeper to our team. His journey through the Elevate Offshore scholarship programme, in partnership with the University of Plymouth, has clearly equipped him with both the technical skills and the mindset needed to thrive in our industry. Hans brings a fresh perspective, a strong foundation in hydrography, and a genuine passion for the field—qualities that align perfectly with our values, ‘Learn, Teach, Reach’.”

Would He Recommend the Scholarship?

“Without a doubt. It takes the stress off, opens doors, and gives you real support when you need it most. I’ve even spoken about it at open days and to students on LinkedIn. If anyone’s thinking about it—apply.”

One Final Word

“I’m just excited to see where this all leads,” Hans finishes. “If anyone is even slightly curious about the offshore sector or renewables, give it a shot. You might surprise yourself.”

We’re incredibly proud of Hans and look forward to supporting even more students on their hydrography journey. To learn more about our scholarship initiative and how to apply, visit Elevate Offshore Scholarship Opportunity.
