Team Insights: Willem de Wet’s Transition from Diamond Mining to Offshore Exploration

In this edition of Team Insights, we focus on Willem de Wet, a Senior Geophysicist and QC Coordinator at Elevate Offshore. With over a year at Elevate Offshore and a career shaped by diverse roles across different sectors, Willem provides valuable insights into the offshore industry’s ongoing developments.

Willem’s journey in geophysics began after earning his Master’s Degree in Geology from the University of Cape Town in 2013. He started his career in the offshore diamond mining industry as a Geophysicist. Later, Willem joined Fugro, where he spent nine years advancing his skills and developing into the role of Senior Geophysicist. In 2022, he transitioned to freelance work, which then led to his current staff position with Elevate Offshore as a QC Coordinator for GeoXYZ.

Life Offshore: Balancing Rewards and Challenges

Describing a typical day at work, Willem says, “My day involves overseeing data processors – both onboard and remote – ensuring data quality, correlating with the office and client, writing reports, and addressing any data-related issues onboard during a 12-hour shift.” While the role is rewarding, he explains that it comes with its share of challenges, particularly around team dynamics and time away from home.

“Working with a diverse team of different nationalities and backgrounds can often present unique challenges, but it also fosters strong collaboration and mutual understanding,” Willem shares. “We learn to support and understand each other, even when we have different outlooks on a problem. Being away from home and family for extended periods is tough, but the time off when I return home helps balance that out. Plus, I enjoy seeing new places and meeting new people.”

Industry Advancements and Future Prospects

The offshore industry is evolving rapidly, particularly with advancements in survey equipment and data quality. Willem is closely engaged with these changes, noting the significance of technological innovation. “Equipment is becoming smaller and more efficient, and with the introduction of Starlink internet, remote work and fully remote-operated survey vessels are now a reality. It’s rewarding to be part of this wave of advancements,” he says.

Willem emphasises the growing importance of geologists and geophysicists in the industry and advises newcomers to build a wide skill set early in their careers. “It’s crucial to understand the entire industry rather than focusing too narrowly on your specific role. This broad perspective will help you adapt and grow over time,” he advises.

Reflecting on his career, Willem recalls numerous memorable projects, including one in the Norwegian fjords during the summer, which he describes as “truly spectacular.”

Collaboration with Elevate Offshore

“Elevate Offshore has been consistently helpful and supportive,” he notes, highlighting the advantages of his staff contract. The arrangement aligns perfectly with the South African 183-day tax rule, providing him with a stable income ideal for saving and managing his mortgage.

He also expresses appreciation for the company’s gestures, such as the merchandise he received earlier this year. “The kit is excellent and comfortable to wear offshore. I’m proud to be part of such a fantastic team!”

Willem’s experience highlights the importance of adaptability, collaboration, and staying informed about industry advancements in the ever-evolving offshore sector. We thank him for sharing his insights and look forward to his continued contributions to the team.
