The European Union will launch its new Entry/Exit System (EES) on 12 October 2025, with full implementation across 29 countries by 9 April 2026.
This system, which replaces traditional passport stamping with a digital record to strengthen and streamline border management across the Schengen Area, will track the entry and exit of non-EU travellers. For offshore contractors travelling to Europe, this means some essential changes to be aware of.
At Elevate Offshore, we want our offshore teams to know what to expect so that travel to and from the vessel runs as smoothly as possible.
Key Changes You’ll Notice
- Digital Records of Travel
- Every time you enter or leave the Schengen Area, your movement will be electronically logged.
- Border authorities will strictly enforce the 90-day in 180-day rule. Overstays may result in fines, bans, or issues on future trips.
- Biometrics at Border Control
- The system will capture your fingerprints and facial scan upon arrival.
- The process should ultimately make crossings faster, but travellers should allow for extra time during the roll-out phase.
- Automated Border Gates
- Major airports and border points will introduce automated gates that utilise your biometric data.
- You may face queues at first, but once the system establishes itself, you will cross borders more quickly.
- Advance Airline Checks
- Airlines must now provide your travel details to the system in advance.
- Ensure that your passport details match your booking exactly to avoid delays.
- Applies to All Travellers
- Whether you travel visa-free or on a multiple-entry visa, the system will track your time in Europe.
- Even short, frequent trips will count towards your limit.
- Secure Data Storage
- The system will store your biometric data and travel history in accordance with EU data protection laws.
- Authorities may use the information if questions arise over visas or immigration.
What This Means For You
The EES enhances border efficiency, but during the transition period, you may encounter longer queues and additional checks.
To avoid issues:
- Keep track of your travel days to stay within limits.
- Arrive early at airports and borders while the system is new.
- Double-check documents and bookings before travelling.
At Elevate Offshore, we’ll continue to monitor the impact of the EES on travel and share updates to keep our people informed.
