Oceanology International continues to be a key milestone for emerging offshore professionals, offering direct access to the technologies, people and conversations shaping the future of the industry.
For Tirren Ambroziak, recipient of the Elevate Offshore MSc Hydrography Scholarship (2025–2026) at the University of Plymouth, the event marked an important step in connecting academic learning with real-world application.
Now in Semester 2 of her studies, Tirren is building on strong foundations with more applied hydrography and survey planning work, alongside practical data processing. Oceanology International provided an opportunity to extend that learning beyond the classroom.
Tirren was particularly interested in hearing directly from industry professionals about the technologies shaping offshore survey operations, as well as gaining clearer insight into the skills and experience employers are actively seeking from the next generation of surveyors.
Reflecting on the event, she said: “I really valued hearing directly from industry professionals about the skills and technologies currently shaping offshore survey operations.”
Reflecting on her studies, she also highlighted how beneficial Semester 2 has been in developing practical skills: “It’s been great to start applying the theory to more practical survey and data processing.”
With a strong interest in emerging technologies, Tirren made the most of the event’s technical sessions and live demonstrations. She was especially keen to attend discussions around the future of uncrewed vehicles and vessels, as well as dockside demonstrations showcasing the latest platforms in action.
A standout moment was stepping aboard the Fugro Explorer, where Tirren had the opportunity to see Kongsberg equipment up close. Guided by skipper Jonathan Frary, who talked through the vessel and its systems, the experience helped contextualise her academic learning within a real-world offshore setting.
Alongside her academic work, Tirren is also continuing to build her presence within the professional community, recently taking on the role of Student and New Graduate Director for the UK Hydrographic Society.
Also attending the event was Danny Kimber, who is studying on the same MSc Hydrography programme. Mentored by Elevate Offshore’s Technical Manager UK, Anthony Williams, Danny used the opportunity to gain his first real exposure to the offshore industry. He and Tirren were joined at the event by fellow MSc student Ed Lawrence, also pictured.
Danny described the event as both valuable and eye-opening: “It was honestly such a useful experience being able to get out there and see the scale of the industry first hand.”
He also highlighted how having the Elevate Offshore team present made a real difference. He told us it gave him a place to return to throughout the day, with a welcoming environment and people who were happy to share advice, insights and introductions.
Beyond the technology and demonstrations, both Tirren and Danny recognised the value of the connections made during the event.
For Danny, meeting potential employers and future colleagues in one place provided a clearer picture of the industry he is preparing to enter. With support and guidance from Anthony, he was able to make meaningful connections that he believes will be valuable as he progresses in his career.
The experience gave him greater confidence in his chosen path and a stronger understanding of how to position himself within the sector moving forward.
Experiences like Oceanology International highlight the importance of creating opportunities for emerging talent to engage directly with the offshore sector.
Through initiatives such as the Elevate Offshore MSc Hydrography Scholarship, awarded to Tirren for the 2025–2026 academic year, and ongoing mentorship for students like Danny, Elevate Offshore remains committed to supporting individuals at every stage of their early careers.
