From MSc Graduation to First Offshore Role: Elyar’s Journey into Hydrography

At Elevate Offshore, supporting the next generation of hydrographic professionals is central to how we invest in the future of the industry.

Oli and Sean from our Cornwall office recently attended the Hydrography Convention by the University of Plymouth, a valuable opportunity to connect with students, academics and industry peers. Events like this play an important role in bridging the gap between education and offshore careers, while helping to strengthen the long-term talent pipeline across survey and hydrography.

A Full-Circle Moment at Plymouth

Elyar Grad 1024x576 - From MSc Graduation to First Offshore Role: Elyar’s Journey into HydrographyOne of the highlights of the convention was seeing Hans Elyar Schaeper, our 2024 Elevate Offshore MSc Hydrography Scholarship recipient, return to the university shortly after graduating from the programme – this time as a graduate now working in his first offshore role with Reach Subsea.

Reflecting on his time on the MSc, Elyar spoke about how the course structure helped prepare him for the transition into employment. The balance of academic teaching and practical experience, delivered progressively throughout the year, gave him a strong grounding in hydrographic fundamentals and the confidence to continue learning once offshore:

“Throughout the MSc course there were a large number of practical and hands-on experiences, spread throughout the year alongside the new subjects and skills we were being taught. I feel this approach helped me feel prepared for my first role, having a solid understanding of hydrography before going offshore.”

He also highlighted the importance of building connections early in a career, encouraging students to engage with both peers and professionals to gain insight, advice and perspective when exploring their options.

From Study to Offshore Work

Looking back from his current role, Elyar reflected on the shift from academic life into full-time offshore work – a transition that, while positive, required adjustment.

“My transition from MSc to my first job was personally a very peculiar one. For most people, a Monday morning routine means getting up, having a coffee and heading into work. For me, it meant doing the same but enjoying my day, as the time between finishing the MSc and going offshore felt quite calm and unusual.

Once I was on the job, being on a vessel was a completely different experience. The routine was very set, which worked well for me, but it was an adjustment to realise that each day is a work day and there aren’t weekends. That said, after my work shift I still had time to relax, and moving from a Masters course into a seven-day working schedule was simply a different way of working. Overall, I felt ready and keen to begin my offshore career.”

Bridging Education and Industry

Hearing Elyar speak highlighted the importance of visibility and real-world perspective for students considering a career in hydrography. First-hand accounts from recent graduates help demystify the transition from study to employment and give a clearer picture of what working offshore actually involves.

A big thank you to the University of Plymouth team for hosting the event, and to everyone who took the time to connect with Oli and Sean on the day.
